Zachary Quinto on saving tigers, Trump, and why hashtag activism is the real deal.

Actor Zachary Quinto (“Star Trek,” “Heroes,” “American Horror Story”) talks to Upworthy about his involvement with tiger-saving campaign #3890Tigers, Trump, breakfast cereals and tigers again.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Upworthy (UP): Why do you want to help save the tigers?

Zachary Quinto (ZQ): Im a long-time animal lover and animal rights activist. When this opportunity came to me, I realized how much [poaching] has been affecting the wild tiger population it was something I felt called to get involved with. There are fewer than 4,000 wild tigers left in the world, which seems absolutely insane.

UP: So judging by your passion to save the tigers, is it safe to say youre more of a cat person than a dog person?

ZQ: Thats actually not safe to say. Im more of a dog person than a cat person. … Sorry to dispel any illusions.

UP: Do you own a dog?

ZQ: I own two dogs. I should say, I rescued two dogs.

UP: Tiger Beer is a big component of this campaign. If you could sit down and have a beer with any famous tiger

ZQ: Tony the Tiger.

UP: Wow, I didnt even finish the question. And why would that be?

ZQ: Because I grew up with, Theyyyyre great! You know, Tony the Tiger and what was that, Frosted Flakes, right? I loved Frosted Flakes when I was a kid. Tony the Tiger really just lodged himself in my imagination.

UP: Whats the craziest thing youve learned about tigers since joining this campaign?

ZQ: I would say their power and the way that they ambush, Im fascinated by. The power of their jaws, that they can take down animals much bigger than themselves.

I would say the thing that Im probably most moved by as powerful as they are theyre also really vulnerable. I feel like theres a lot of fear associated with animals like [tigers], but they also need protection. That balance and the delicacy of that is something that Im really interested in.

UP: As the saying goes, a tiger doesnt change its stripes

ZQ: Isnt it that a leopard cant change its spots? I think youre mixing your feline metaphors.

UP: Oh, am I?

ZQ: I wont hold you for that. … [laughs] I’m going with you, I’m going with you.

UP: What’s the most out-of-character thing you’ve had to do where youve had to change your stripes or your spots for a role?

ZQ: I dont know, I guess I would have to say skinning a woman alive? Thats pretty far away from my inherent nature.

UP: Was that for “American Horror Story”?

ZQ: [laughs] It was “American Horror Story,” yeah.

UP: Speaking of “American Horror Story” youve played a lot of interesting characters throughout your career. Which one do you think has the most tiger-like qualities?

ZQ: Interesting. I like to use animals to kind of inform characters that I play in exploring who they are and building a character. Never used a big cat, specifically. But I guess I would say the character I played in “Heroes” maybe had some qualities of, like he was very stealthy, and he stalked and pounced, and had some characteristics of a tiger.

UP: The Russia investigation, the Senates health care bill theres a lot of news happening right now. Why should we care about tigers?

ZQ: Were in a moment now where we can still reverse the decline, and I think that its a crucial moment. Thats the key for me to inspire people and to raise awareness is a way to do that.

UP: If you could have President Trumps ear for a minute to talk about this issue, what would you say to him?

ZQ: I feel like, I dont even know where to begin with what I would say to him, just in general. Id have a lot of things to say to him, Im sure. I feel like [this campaign is] more about rallying people. Its about inspiring a collective voice.

I think what we can do in the face of this political climate is to really engage. Partly what drew me particularly to this opportunity and initiative is that people can get involved and spread the word, and thats what Im more interested in inspiring likeminded people to rise up and raise awareness and raise money.

UP: Some people say hashtag activism isnt real activism, but this campaign has a big social media component. Would you argue that social media activism matters?

ZQ: [Online activism] has become the real world, for better or for worse. Everyone walks around with this portal in their pocket, and we check our phones I think more often than we check in with each other sometimes. So I feel like what used to be tangible and actionable in the streets has become much more virtual and digital in the last decade.

Modes of communication have really shifted within our culture, and I feel like social media has become such an inextricably tied way of expressing yourself that I think it can be really effective. With the press of a button, you can reach millions of people, and even if just a fraction of those people stand up and do something about a cause, it really makes a difference.

The #3890Tigers campaign a partnership between Tiger Beer and the World Wildlife Fund aims to raise awareness and funding for tiger conservation efforts around the globe. There are just 3,890 tigers left in the wild, according to the WWF; the campaign wants to double that number by 2022 the next year of the Zodiac tiger.

To join the efforts, supporters are encouraged to delete their profile pictures to raise awareness about the disappearing wild tiger population. Over the past 100 years, human activity has killed about 96% of the species, largely due to poaching and habitat loss.

Supporters can also create a selfie celebrating tigers on the campaign website, as Quinto has done below, to share on their social feeds, as well as donate to the WWF. Tiger Beer, which has already donated $1 million toward the nonprofit, is matching new gifts up to $25,000.

Nobody Was Drinking At The Party Where Police Killed Jordan Edwards

There was never a reason for Jordan Edwards to be fatally shot by a police officer ― and a new report reveals that there was never even a reason for authorities to be at the party the teen was attending.

No teens were drinking or doing illicit drugs at a house party in suburban Dallas where Edwards, 15, was killed on April 29, a law enforcement official told the Dallas Morning News this week.

A newly released autopsy report also reveals that Edwards wasn’t under the influence when officer Roy Oliver shot him. The officer was responding to a reports that teens had been drinking at a party.

Oliver, 37, was fired and then charged with murder within a week of the shooting.

Initially, Balch Springs Police Chief Jonathan Haber said Oliver opened fire on the vehicle Edwards was sitting in because the driver was reversing aggressively toward him. Haber changed his tune after video evidence showed the car driving away from officers.

Oliver allegedly fired his rifle into the vehicle, striking Edwards once in the head. Edwards’ two brothers and two of his friends were in the car with him.

An unidentified law enforcement official told the Dallas Morning News that Oliver and another officer were inside the party just before the fatal encounter, and saw kids carrying energy drinks and sodas. They didn’t find any evidence of underage consumption, except for an empty beer bottle in a kitchen trash can.

“That was a condition of them attending the party,” Lee Merritt, the family’s attorney, told the paper. “If they saw anyone drinking, they had to leave.”

Stockholm attack: Suspect has ISIS sympathies

Stockholm (CNN)A man arrested over a truck attack in Stockholm that killed four people had shown sympathies to extremist groups, including ISIS, Swedish police said Sunday.

Police also identified the four victims’ nationalities — two were Swedish, one British and one Belgian, while the prosecutor’s office said a second arrest had been made.
The first suspect, a 39-year-old man from the central Asian nation of Uzbekistan, was known to intelligence services before he was arrested on Friday.
“We know he has shown sympathies to extreme groups, among them ISIS. We won’t comment any further on that,” national police spokesman Jonas Hysing said.
The suspect had applied for residency in Sweden in 2014 but his application was rejected in December last year, another police spokesman, Jan Evensson, told reporters.

He was given four weeks to leave the country, and in February his case was handed to police to deport him.
Karin Rosander, spokeswoman for Sweden’s prosecutors office, said that the second person arrested was “suspected of terror crimes through murder.”
“He is suspected on reasonable grounds, which is the lower degree of suspicion. The other individual is suspected with probable cause, the higher degree of suspicion,” she said.
Britain’s foreign office named UK citizen Chris Bevington as among the dead, but gave no details on the victim.
“We are all devastated by the untimely and tragic death of our talented, compassionate and caring son Chris,” the victim’s father, John Bevington, said in a statement. “A wonderful husband, son, father, brother and close friend to many.”
Bevington worked as a director for the music streaming service Spotify.
“The only light in this deeply tragic moment is the outpouring of love, compassion and solidarity that we have seen from everyone,” said Spotify founder Daniel Ek on Facebook. “And that was exactly the kind of person Chris was as well.”

    Truck attacks strike Europe

The attack was launched in Stockholm on Fridaywhen a beer truck plowed into a department store in the center of the Swedish capital, sending crowds running in panic. In addition to the four killed, 15 people were injured, four of them critically, Stockholm County Council said earlier.
Sweden has stepped up its security, with approximately 100 police officers deployed from across the country to assist in Stockholm. National counterterrorism, bomb and air assets are also providing support.
The incident comes on the heels of several similar attacks in Europe — a man rammed his car into a crowd in London near Parliament in March, killing five people. In December, a large truck plowed into a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12. And on France’s Bastille Day last July, at least 85 people were killed when another large truck mowed down a crowd celebrating the day.
Swedish police said Saturday that they had found a “device” in the truck that they were investigating.
“Whether this was a classic bomb or some sort of flammable device is now a matter for our analysis,” Swedish Police Chief Dan Eliasson said.
Thousand of people gathered at Stockholm’s Sergel Square on Sunday to remember the victims. The organizers called on people to put their political views and differences aside, and come together in a show of unity.
Attendees laid flowers on a large Swedish flag placed down the square’s steps, while a woman in an Islamic headscarf was seen smiling with police guarding the ceremony, as she handed them flowers.
“Sweden is united,” said Stockholm resident Olsa Ekermann.
“This will change things though. People are more alert, and earlier I heard an ambulance, and everyone looked afraid like something was happening.”
