A nice garden can add to the value of a house and provide aesthetic pleasure to both the owner and people passing by. A well-maintained garden requires a surprisingly small amount of work, if the proper precautions and work is set into place initially. This article will provide some tips and tricks to help you on your gardening efforts!

Keep herb plants trimmed and bushy. By consistently pruning your herb plants you will create a shorter path for nutrients and allow the leaves to grow fuller and quicker. Keep the plants short through trimming as well and increase the density of the leaves. When at all possible do not allow the herbs to flower.

Run your fingernails across a bar of soap before you go out to weed or plant in your garden. The soap that collected under your nails will prevent the collection of dirt while you work. Afterward, a simple scrub with a nail brush will remove the soap and leave your hands clean, with much less effort.

To make sure you don’t accidentally dig up bulbs in the following year, mark them with twigs. They should stay in place over the winter, and will be an easy reminder when you’re planting new things in the spring. This is especially nice because you don’t have to buy anything beforehand. Just grab some nearby twigs and put them in place.

Make sure to keep your eye on your garden for pests. They can eat away your plants or foods and cause irreparable damage. If you do find them in your garden, it is important that you get rid of them as soon as possible before they reproduce and create more problems.

If you have a vegetable garden and plan on eating the vegetables, you should inspect them carefully every week. Look for bugs and worms or traces of disease and damages. Do not eat a vegetable that does not look healthy. Make sure you wash your vegetables carefully before you cook them.

Use crushed egg shells around plants to deter slugs and snails. Save your egg shells, crush them into small pieces, and scatter them around the base of tender plants. Slugs and snails will not be able to crawl over the sharp shells to get to the plant. Also, the calcium from the egg shells makes its way into the soil, which is excellent for plant growth.

Keep slugs out of your tender plants. Cut the bottom 2 inches off a plastic soda bottle to make a ‘saucer’. Dig a little hole near to any tender plants and bury the saucer with about 1/4 inch left above ground. Fill it with beer, and leave it overnight The slugs will be attracted to the sugar in the beer and will make their way in, never to get out again!

Hopefully, this article has given you tips and tricks to enjoy a well-maintained garden.
Most people consider gardens to be high-maintenance, when in reality they require less than 20 minutes of work a day. This misconception can lead people to let their lawn or backyard go into a state of disrepair, which actually takes more time and hard work to remedy than simple daily maintenance. Remember, a little time spent here and there can add to the value of a house and be a real pleasure to look at for both the owner and people passing by.
