In the world of gardening, there are plenty of great resources available to both new and experienced gardeners alike. There are many classes, e-guides, books, videos, magazines, and other resources available. This set of tips contains some of the best advice for helping a good gardener become a great gardener.

A great tip to consider in regards to gardening is the fact that picking flowers off of your annuals can actually be beneficial to your plants. This is important to know because when you do this, it will actually train your annual plants to produce flowers on a greater frequency.

It is important to spray chemicals when it is not windy outside. Wind can cause chemicals to get into your eyes or cause you to inhale them. There are some chemicals that can be very harmful if ingested. By only applying sprayed chemicals on windless days you can help protect yourself from accidental ingestion.

Make a handy twine dispenser from old clay pots. To always have gardening twine ready to use, take an old clay pot, and place it in your garden where you want your twine dispenser to be. Then place your ball of twine in it, and turn a second clay pot upside down. Thread the twine through the drainage hole of the upside down pot and place it on top of the bottom pot. You now have a handy dispenser!

Use crushed egg shells around plants to deter slugs and snails. Save your egg shells, crush them into small pieces, and scatter them around the base of tender plants. Slugs and snails will not be able to crawl over the sharp shells to get to the plant. Also, the calcium from the egg shells makes its way into the soil, which is excellent for plant growth.

Keep slugs out of your tender plants. Cut the bottom 2 inches off a plastic soda bottle to make a ‘saucer’. Dig a little hole near to any tender plants and bury the saucer with about 1/4 inch left above ground. Fill it with beer, and leave it overnight The slugs will be attracted to the sugar in the beer and will make their way in, never to get out again!

Develop an irrigation system for your lawn. A good sprinkler system aims to reach all the points of the yard with an even spread of water. Overwatering in one section can cause you to have nice green growth, but have other areas grow brown from neglect or lack of water. A proper irrigation system should hit all of the areas of your lawn.

A good tip of what to plant in the garden is to plant high-value crops. Value is a subjective term, but plant the things that are most costly to buy, as long as they are suited to the climate. The whole garden does not have to be devoted to this, but if an area is earmarked for this type of crop, it can save money in the coming season when prices are sky high for certain crops.

After reading these tips, you can begin to understand what it takes to become a great gardener. There is a lot of information to learn and you need to know how to apply it. With this in mind, you can refine your own strategies and goals to help you grow and maintain beautiful gardens.
