With another summer coming to a close, fall is just around the corner…and I could not be more excited!
What’s not to love about autumn? It’s that magical time of year where the leaves change colors and pumpkin spice invades every aisle at the grocery store. All your favorite TV shows have finally returned from their summer hiatuses, and Halloween is closer than you even realize. Football games, warm apple cider, campfires, candy corn: the list never ends.
For jetsetters, nothing beats seeing the world at its best. While summer is thought to be the peak of the travel season, fall is far more superior in plenty of places. Here’s a list of 12 travel destinations that are significantly improved when the leaves start to turn.
1. Santiago, Chile
While the U.S. experiences chillier temps, this Chilean destination spends much of September through November warming up to spring-like conditions. This is the best time to visit Santiago. During these months, there is plenty of sunshine and the crowds of tourists begin to thin out. Flights from the U.S. to Santiago are also relatively cheaper during the fall.
2. New York City
New York is the city that never sleeps, so no matter what time of year, you can guarantee something amazing will be happening. Fall is the best season to take in the foliage in Central Park. It’s also the perfect time to get a head start on all your holiday shopping.
3. Paris, France
As the temperatures begin to cool, so do the crowds in this popular French city. Hotel prices become more affordable and you won’t have to wait hours in line to see all the famous attractions. I recommend taking in the trees at the Tuileries Garden.
4. Acadia National Park, Maine
Mid-October is the perfect time of year to go “leaf-peeping” at Acadia National Park. You can hike, bike, or climb your way around the rockbound coastline and the many trails and lakes. There’s not a bad view when it comes to watching the seasons change here.
5. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
As the days get shorter, the opportunities at Yellowstone remain largely unchanged. I couldn’t think of a more beautiful place to take in the changing of the leaves. You can also hit the trails without worrying about tons of tourists. You should pay close attention to trail and road closures, though, as some amenities do shut down once summer ends.
6. Boston, Massachusetts
We recommend taking an early-morning walk along the Freedom Trail to enjoy the chill in the air mixed with the beautiful foliage. A multitude of concerts and art shows flood the streets with opportunities for all to enjoy. The local breweries are also in the process of crafting everything that’s great about fall in liquid form (pumpkin beer, anyone?).
7. Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Come September, most of the tourists have returned to their everyday lives. Luckily, you’ll find most of the national parks are still open. An area of interest for photography lovers is Oxbow Bend in Grand Teton National Park. One peculiar aspect of fall in Wyoming includes the annual elk-mating season. You can hear the male elk “bugling” as they attempt to find their female counterparts.
8. Vancouver, Canada
Alternative theatre events hit the streets of Vancouver during the fall months. The Vancouver Fringe Festival brings more than 700 performers to the area. The VanDusen Botanical Garden is another must-see attraction, featuring a variety of picture-perfect fall-scapes in one place.
9. Savannah, Georgia
Southern hospitality puts Savannah on any best-of-fall list. The still nice weather well into autumn combined with incredible comfort food and amazing architecture spells out a perfect getaway. The Savannah Jazz Festival and Tybee Island Pirate Fest are just a few of the many events to enjoy during the fall months.
10. Munich, Germany
Munich is home to a variety of festivals during the fall months including Oktoberfest. Enjoy a variety of brews, bratwurst, and other Bavarian customs. The leaves also change during “Altweibersommer,” the German equivalent to an Indian Summer.
11. Chicago, Illinois
Fall in Chicago means cheaper flights into the city and inexpensive hotel rooms. The annual Chicago Marathon takes place every October and is a treat for both runners and spectators alike. This is also the time of year to take in a game at Wrigley field before baseball season is over.
12. Melbourne, Australia

Just like in Chile, fall in the U.S. means springtime in Melbourne. Expect blooming flowers everywhere you look. I recommend taking in the Royal Botanic Gardens or Phillip Island Nature Park. A day trip to the Yarra Valley wineries will warm you up during some of the breezier months on the Aussie calendar.
