For many of us, gardening is more than something we do simply to make our house or our property look more attractive. It can be an ideal way to lower our stress levels and get some exercise while breathing in fresh air and getting in touch with nature.
In areas that are very dry, you should plant drought resistant plants. These hardy plants will survive, and thrive, on very little water, and in hot conditions. Many varieties have blooms as beautiful as any high maintenance types of plants. You can even get low-water edible plants for your garden.
When you are working on your garden, you should always be sure to have a good product to kneel on. There are many products that are especially designed for gardening, and these are incredibly important as they allow you to feel more relaxed and comfortable as well as protecting your knees.
When applying mulch, lay the mulch thickest between plants, and taper the mulch down to soil level. Avoid piling the mulch against the trunks or against the stems of plants, this will invite pests, disease and dampness to the plant and may encourage mold or rot. Avoid using peat moss as mulch because it will dry out and can blow away.
Salt deposits can form unsightly marks on your clay pots. To easily remove the deposits mix water, rubbing alcohol and white vinegar in equal parts and spray onto the pots. Scrub with a plastic pad or brush and allow the pot to dry completely. Once the pot is dry, you are ready to plant.
Deadhead annual flowers constantly. This will encourage new growth and promote flowering all season. With perennials, cut the entire plant down by a third after flowering. It will bush out and provide you with a new flush of flowers later in the season. At the end of the season, leave the spent flowers on plants until they dry up, and collect the seeds.
Yeast traps can rid your garden of slugs. Just sink some shallow jars filled with beer into the ground. The slugs are naturally attracted to the yeast the beer contains. They will enter the trap and won’t come out. Check your traps every few days to keep them clean.
If you are not a fan of wearing gloves when gardening but still hate dirty fingernails, try scraping your fingernails in a bar of soap prior to beginning. The soap will keep soil from entering underneath your nails, plus the soap will help keep your nails from cracking or breaking.
Hold off having a pond in your garden until your children are older. A pond, no matter how shallow, can be very dangerous for small children. If you start off with a sunken sandpit for your toddlers to play in, you can easily convert it into a garden pond when they are older. Simply line the area with a rubber pond liner or use a preformed pond.
Creating a beautiful garden and enjoying a relaxing hobby is well within your reach. If you use these tips, you will find out that gardening can prove fun and enjoyable!
