Many people enjoy getting their hands dirty in the garden. There’s nothing quite like growing your own flowers, fruits, and vegetables, and it’s easy to do with the right information, like that found in this article. Even if you don’t have a large yard, even small spaces like balconies can provide enough space for a surprising amount of plants.

If you have a good season, do not let your vegetables go to waste. Give them away to family, friends and neighbors. You can also preserve them for future use by canning, freezing or dehydrating the excess vegetables. If you still have too much, call your local food bank to see if they except donations.

Slugs can be a big problem in the garden. One suggestion for getting rid of slugs is to fill shallow containers, like a tuna can, with a mixture of one part beer and one part water. The slugs are attracted to the smell and will fall in and drown. Three teaspoons of yeast added to one cup of warm water will also work.

If you are gardening in containers, be sure each container has a drainage system to prevent water from pooling. Lining the bottom of a container with small rocks or pebbles can also help with water drainage for container gardening. Allowing water to sit for extended periods can rot the root system of your plants.

During the hot season, water your lawn a couple of hours before the sun rises. If you water during the day, much of the water will evaporate before it gets a chance to be absorbed into the ground. When you water before the sunrise, the water will have a chance to go deep into the soil, allowing the roots to absorb the water.

Create an illusion of space. If you have a small garden, use color to create an illusion of more space. A background of blues, grays, pinks and mauves will create a misty effect, giving you the feeling of depth. If you use a bright color in the foreground such as red, this will emphasize the effect, as it draws the eye forward.

Use stones as plant markers if you want to keep a natural looking motif. You can write with permanent magic marker on the flat side of stones and surround your plant with them. That way you will be able to tell what type of plants you have without having an unsightly white mark.

Before planting anything, clean up as much as possible the area where you plan on having flowers or any other delicate plants. Remove all the weeds and the grass if you think it is necessary. Your flowers should not have any competitors for the nutrients they need while they grow.

You don’t need a green thumb or lots of land to be a gardener. Whether you want the satisfaction of growing your own delicious vegetables in the garden, or having the prettiest roses on the block, these great hints can help you to succeed.
